                 Welcome to the wwPDB FTP archive
=====================================================================

The World Wide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB) maintains this single archive 
of macromolecular structural data that is freely and publicly available 
to the global community.  Information about the wwPDB can be found at
the wwPDB website (http://www.wwpdb.org).

On July 13, 2011, the wwPDB FTP archive was updated to PDB Exchange  
Dictionary Version 4.0 (version 3.3 of the PDB file format). Documentation
for the format and content of the Version 4.0 release can be found at 
http://www.wwpdb.org/docs.html.

Frozen snapshots of the contents of this FTP archive are available at 
ftp://snapshots.rcsb.org, including yearly snapshots, and snapshots 
on July 31, 2007 (20070731), March 16, 2009 (20090316), and July 7, 2011 
(20110707) prior to three major version releases.

All users who wish to maintain a full copy of the wwPDB FTP archive
need to perform an initial download of the new archive, which can
then be updated on a weekly basis. The wwPDB ftp site is quite large. 
As of September 29, 2011, it contains more than 577,000 files and requires
over 130 GB of storage. It will continue to grow with each weekly 
update. Fresh downloads will require substantial amount of time.
